The Site I chose for my Year 3 Projects is a small town in South Wales called Ebbw Vale. This town was the site of a steelworks and later tinplating site until it was closed down in 2002. This left the area as one of the poorest in Britain with very high unemployment and in need of further development.
My aim for this project was to create an area where locals could record memories of the old steelworks. This is because, through my research, I found embodied memory to be important in reinforcing the identity of a place and the people living in it. The idea is the information collected in this intervention will be used in future developments.
This is a development project that I have designed to allow people who worked at the steelworks a place to teach skills, young people to learn skills, connect the highstreet to the South of Ebbw Vale and make the highstreet more accessible for tourists and visitors to the town.
